Meet the Artists
Welcome to our website! We are Julie and Sophie Reddy, a self-taught mother-daughter painting duo from West Yorkshire, England.
At SJ Fine Art you will find a collection of both of our original paintings. Our styles differ quite a lot, with Julie focusing mainly on impressionistic landscapes, and Sophie mostly painting realistic still life pieces with an emphasis on food and drink.
About Julie
Julie is a self taught painter based in West Yorkshire. The aim of her art is to evoke the feeling of the local landscape and sky with atmosphere and energy.
Julie had barely picked up a paint brush since her days at secondary school, where she was encouraged to study more academic subjects instead of pursuing art. Fast forward almost forty years, after getting married and having two children, she had an urge to start a creative hobby as a contrast from her work in accounting and administration.
After dabbling with different paint media, Julie found her passion for oil and acrylic painting, drawing inspiration from both classical and modern painters. She uses both brush and palette knife techniques to achieve texture in her paintings.
Julie is now retired and spends her time painting, reading and exploring the local area for inspiration.
About Sophie
Sophie is a self taught oil painter based in Yorkshire. The focus of Sophie's work is to use art as a mindfulness practice to observe and appreciate beauty in everyday objects.
Art has been an important part of her mental health journey, a passion she has dipped in and out of throughout the years in different forms. In her late teens and early twenties her art was almost exclusively graphite portraits of people and animals. This was put on hold for most of her twenties to focus on her career as an Analytical Scientist in the Pharmaceutical industry.
Shortly before turning 30, she returned to the art world, initially with oil pastel still life studies, before moving to work predominantly with water mixable oil paints after encouragement and guidance from her mother, Julie.
When not painting, Sophie continues to work full time as a supervisor of a small team of Analytical Scientists. She also enjoys climbing, learning Korean and German, reading and travelling.
